Why we sing with Cantigas…

Leah– Second Soprano

I simply feel better after singing. I confess that much of the music that Joany introduces to us, I have never heard before. The crazy and wonderful part about this is that the songs I find the strangest at first, are the ones I grow to love the most. It makes me hold off on judgment in rehearsal…a lesson I try to remember outside rehearsal. This, in part with the camaraderie of the diverse and amazing women of Cantigas, has really expanded my world and my joy.

Jan– Alto

There are two things I love about singing in Cantigas. I've learned more about how to sing beautifully in two years from Joany Litman than from all of my previous choral experience (more years than I want to say in public) combined. Joany has also introduced me to a range of repertoire way, way beyond what I have previously experienced. I counted eight languages in one concert, and each came wedded to its own musical form.

Debbie– Alto

I've sung in several other choruses with a variety of conductors -- different philosophies, musical choices and levels, performance venues -- but Cantigas is by far my favorite. I think what distinguishes Cantigas from the other groups is that we are never treated as animate musical instruments that produce sounds. Joany never forgets, and so we also never forget, that music is written by and for people: the composers were human beings with ideas and passions; we as singers are united in a musical family; and our audience has human needs and feelings to which the music speaks.

Rachel– Alto

The only thing better than singing your heart out is singing your heart out with a group! And having the opportunity to sing among such a diverse group of women is so empowering. There's no doubt I'm in my best mood every week right after our rehearsals! Being about the share the gift of our song with the Bayonne Cancer Survival Group was such a unique experience. Just to look out at the faces who were so engaged was a memory I will always cherish.

Anne - Soprano

Cantigas is the high point of my week. Going into a room with a bunch of great women, with Joany at the helm, is great. We sound great together. I love to look around the room at the faces of my friends, as we sing an amazing repertoire.

Carolyn–Soprano

My passion for choral music is fairly new. I have met several others in the choir who are also musical "late bloomers." I love the diverse selection of global music we perform. The humor and encouragement from our director, Joan Litman is inspiring.
I am grateful to be given the opportunity to train my ear and voice with this talented group of women.
